An Analysis of China’s Wind Power Development Trends

China’s 11th Five-Year Plan helped boost many industries, especially wind power industry which almost starts from scratch and is now getting close to advanced world level. From the perspective of western insiders, China achieved lightening fast growth during the period.

Obtaining lightening fast growth
The final year of 11th Five-Year Plan period was widely recognized as the first year of China’s offshore wind power era. In that year, Shanghai Donghai Bridge Wind Farm, the first offshore wind power demonstration project, was put into operation and National Energy Administration initiated bidding for the first batch of large-scale offshore wind farms.
Actually, Sinovel tapped this field at a relatively fast pace. Its installed wind power capacity respectively amounted to 100,000 KW in Shanghai Donghai Bridge Wind Farm Project and 600,000 KW in intertidal zone along coastal Jiangsu. Its 3 MW, 5 MW, 6 MW and 10 MW wind turbine generator systems under development are mainly used in the sea.
Han Junliang, president of Sinovel, expressed that China’s offshore wind power industry would see wide application of 5 MW, 6 MW or larger generator systems in the future, just like Europe. According to Sinovel, one of its five strategies advocates service integration, requiring one’s own team, ports and docks.
In the early stage of China’s offshore wind energy development, we were confronted with doubts and questionings. Many experts preferred to pursue sound policies and considered it unprofitable and premature.
However, European countries have been occupying in this field for ten years and the installed capacity explored has reached about 3 million kilowatts. Only after several years of development, China’s wind power industry has almost caught up with advanced world level. To maintain our own advantages, offshore wind power will definitely become the next commanding height of the market.

Developing high-capacity WTGS
Those who can launch large generator systems against time will seize the commanding height of wind power market, at least for now. We still widely used multi-kilowatt wind turbines in the past two years, while 10 MW ones are being developed at present. The upgrading pace is being accelerated.
In Britain, Denmark and other European countries, average capacity of each single unit has reached 2.5 MW and about 1.6 MW in China. Han said, “Developing high-capacity wind turbine is the right way to achieve global leadership. It is also the only way to gain global growth. ”
Looking back into the history of China’s equipment manufacturing industry, we can discover that equipment upsizing always takes place together with technical progress. Take thermal generator sets for example. We mainly used 500 KW thermal generator sets twenty years ago, then 100,000 KW ones and 200,000 KW ones afterwards. It took us 5 years to expand generator set capacity from 200,000 KW to 300,000 KW, 4 years from 330,000 KW to 600,000 KW and 3 years from 600,000 KW to 1 million KW. Hence, upsizing is an inevitable evolution.

Featuring mechanical operation
Each time when power grids ask for improvement of wind farms, technological innovation consequently takes place. In the future, wind turbine generator systems will works better under new control mode and become less dependent on manual operation.
Wind power grid integration has long been a bottleneck for China or oven the whole world due to many reasons. Power grids have to go with wind farms and at the same time, wind turbine generator systems have to meet the other’s requests, such as having low voltage ride through ability.
At present, China has been setting industry and national standards for this line, which are bound to be more stringent. Since grid integration ability of wind turbines has a direct influence on the interests of wind farm developers, improvement in this aspect and automation are of great urgency.
Possessing low voltage ride through capability, automatic fire fighting system and other abilities, wind turbine generator systems will combine more and more advanced technologies.

Marching towards international markets
If we attribute the successfulness of China’s wind power companies to the explosively growing domestic market, then their future development depends on international market expansion. Needless to say, companies have to tap international markets in order to maintain steady development since domestic economy will inevitably encounter fluctuation.
